The festival takes place on the  29th to 31st December deep into the desert in Libya.  The Tuareg oasis is the dramatic setting of an ancient Medina, combined with a desert and the Acacus mountain range, is home to the Ghat festival.

Camel Racing Is Also A Major Part of The Festival

Camels run up to 65 mph (compared 88 mph for horses) , this can be maintained only for a short period. They can however run for 40 mph for an hour.  The sport itself dates back to the 7th century, where it was common practice on the Arab peninsula.

The race is extremely important for the locals, not only for prestige but also the prize money is significant.  The winner gets 2000 Libyan dinars (1600 $), which part of this sum winners sometimes throw back to the audience in recognition of their support.
